What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating CONNECTing to LungCare, a smoking cessation and lung cancer screening intervention designed to improve shared decision-making conversations between patients and healthcare providers. This study focuses on how patient education and decision support tools can enhance knowledge, reduce uncertainty, and encourage discussions about quitting smoking and screening for lung cancer. The intervention is being tested for feasibility and acceptability among primary care patients who smoke or are candidates for lung cancer screening. The study includes a beta testing phase where participants interact with the CONNECTing to LungCare program and provide feedback to improve it. In the feasibility trial, participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: one group receives the CONNECTing to LungCare intervention, including education, tailored video content based on smoking status and readiness to quit, a summary for their provider, follow-up phone calls, and optional text messages; the other group receives usual care from their provider. Follow-up occurs at one and three months after the intervention. Participants will engage in assessments before their primary care appointment, including questionnaires and video segments tailored to their responses. Researchers will monitor recruitment, retention, and adherence rates over up to one year. They will also track smoking cessation rates, lung cancer screening rates, and shared decision-making outcomes over three months. Additional data, such as saliva samples and surveys, will be collected to support ancillary studies. The total participation time varies depending on the study phase and group assignment.
