What this Trial Is About

This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of structured Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) for families with adolescents experiencing mild emotional regulation problems. EFFT focuses on improving secure attachment between parents and their children to address underlying emotional issues. The pilot study is designed to measure changes in family interaction and attachment over time. The structured EFFT treatment involves four phases across 16 to 21 sessions. Phase 1 includes 1-2 sessions with the whole family to reframe adolescent problems as attachment-related. Phases 2A and 2B run in parallel with sessions for parents and adolescents to explore insecure attachment. Phase 3 focuses on developing secure attachment with joint sessions, followed by Phase 4 with whole-family sessions to consolidate gains and address remaining issues. A final booster session is also included. Treatment adherence is monitored through independent rating of recorded sessions. Participants will undergo a three-wave study design: a 2-month waiting period, a 3-4 month treatment phase, and a 2-month follow-up ending with the booster session. Families complete questionnaires at five time points to assess changes in interaction patterns, attachment, parenting discipline, couple satisfaction, and adolescent complaints. Feasibility is assessed using interviews after treatment. The average participation lasts about one year per family, with ongoing monitoring and analysis of treatment impact.
