What this Trial Is About

This research aims to understand how cerebral oxygen levels measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) relate to other common monitoring measures in patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries in the semi-sitting (beach chair) position under general anesthesia. The study focuses on whether NIRS readings align with heart rate, invasive mean arterial pressure, end-tidal carbon dioxide, and arterial blood gas changes. It also explores how these brain oxygenation measures are linked to patient health conditions like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Participants will be adult patients classified as ASA I-III who are scheduled for elective orthopedic surgeries such as shoulder arthroscopy or clavicle fracture fixation performed in the semi-sitting position. During surgery, patients will receive standard anesthesia care with continuous monitoring that includes NIRS for cerebral oxygenation, invasive arterial pressure, heart rate, peripheral oxygen levels, and carbon dioxide levels. No additional treatments will be given beyond standard care, and data collection will occur from before anesthesia induction through surgery, with measurements repeated every 30 minutes. Throughout the study, researchers will gather detailed monitoring data and record patient comorbidities to analyze correlations between cerebral oxygenation and systemic parameters. Statistical methods will be applied to assess relationships and differences. The study aims to improve understanding of brain perfusion monitoring during these types of surgeries, especially in patients with multiple health conditions. Participation involves routine monitoring and data collection only, with no extra interventions or risks beyond usual care.

Your Study Journey

Screening

Duration - 2 to 4 weeks

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial.

1 visit (in-person)

Diagnostic Evaluation

Duration - Preoperative period (day of surgery)

Participants undergo baseline assessments including preoperative evaluation of comorbidities and preparation for monitoring during surgery.

1 visit (in-person)

Monitoring

Duration - Duration of surgery (several hours)

During orthopedic surgery in the semi-sitting position, participants are continuously monitored using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) alongside standard intraoperative monitoring to assess cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamic parameters.
