What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the First Face for Mental Health training curriculum in Tribal communities to see if it helps community members respond better to youth and adults experiencing mental health crises. This study focuses on whether the training increases mental health knowledge, response ability, confidence, and reduces stigma while strengthening cultural identity. The trial uses a waitlist controlled design involving seven Tribal Nations, aiming to improve mental health support within these communities. The study involves two groups: one receiving the First Face training initially and another receiving it six months later. The training is culturally grounded and takes about 8 hours to complete. Multiple small group trainings occur within each tribe, with participants completing surveys before and after training. Over two years, both groups undergo several assessments to compare changes in knowledge, attitudes, and response actions. Participants will complete surveys at up to seven time points, including before training, immediately after, and at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months follow-up. These surveys measure mental health knowledge, stigma, cultural identity, and the ability and confidence to respond to crises. The study tracks responsive actions and evaluates sustained changes over time. The total participation spans two years, allowing researchers to assess both immediate and lasting impacts of the training.
