What this Trial Is About

Smoking is a leading preventable cause of death, and quitting smoking is particularly challenging for couples where both partners smoke. This research studies how couples support each other during a quit attempt, focusing on "communal coping" — when partners face quitting as a shared challenge. The study aims to learn which types of support help couples quit smoking successfully. The study involves dual-smoking couples where both partners complete brief daily surveys over two weeks while trying to quit smoking. These surveys will track how partners support or discourage each other, plus cigarette use, cravings, and stress. Researchers will use this information to understand helpful relationship patterns for quitting. Participants will report their smoking status daily during the two-week study and again two weeks later, and their lung carbon monoxide levels will be measured daily during the first two weeks. The data collected will help identify targets for future programs that support couples in quitting smoking together. The study is observational, with no treatments provided, and participation lasts about one month including follow-up.
