Researchers are evaluating a diagnostic method called metagenomic sequencing in people with ocular inflammation when standard tests have not identified an cause. This technique can detect nearly all known infections including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites in eye fluid samples. The study aims to improve diagnosis and treatment options for ocular inflammation, which can sometimes be caused or triggered by infections but often remains unexplained by current testing methods. Participants will have fluid samples taken from inside the eye during routine care, and this fluid will be analyzed using metagenomic sequencing alongside standard tests. The study includes additional non-invasive eye imaging techniques such as anterior segment OCT, laser flare photometry, confocal microscopy, and color fundus photography on the day of the clinic visit. There are no extra visits required beyond regular clinical appointments. During the study, researchers will measure how often metagenomic sequencing provides useful clinical results and whether these results lead to changes in treatment that benefit patients. The study will last about a year and is conducted at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Participants will be monitored using imaging and clinical assessments without additional interventions outside their standard care.
