What this Trial Is About
Tobacco use is a leading cause of preventable cancer deaths, with many young adults using nicotine and tobacco products, which increases their risk of addiction and harmful health effects. Researchers are evaluating a mobile health intervention called Living Free from Tobacco (LiFT) that aims to support young adults in quitting tobacco, regardless of their readiness to quit. The trial compares two versions of the LiFT app, each designed with different approaches to help users stop using nicotine and tobacco. Participants will be assigned to one of three study phases. In the user-centered design phase, participants provide feedback on LiFT app prototypes through interviews to help improve the program. In the pilot trial phase, participants use either the LiFT A app, which includes interactive exercises based on acceptance and commitment therapy, or the LiFT B app, which offers educational content about quitting and mental health. Both groups receive text messages 2 to 3 times per week for three months. In the post-pilot diary study phase, participants use the LiFT app while completing daily assessments about usability and satisfaction for about one week, followed by a survey and interview. Throughout the study, participants engage in various activities including app use, interviews, surveys, and usability assessments. Researchers will measure overall satisfaction, app usage, program usefulness, and willingness to recommend the program over three months. They will also assess quitting outcomes, such as abstinence from tobacco confirmed by biochemical tests, and changes in attitudes toward tobacco use. The total participation time varies by phase, with the pilot phase lasting three months and the diary study about one week.
