What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a smoke-free home intervention aimed at reducing exposure to secondhand smoke from commercial tobacco in homes within rural tribal communities. This approach is an innovative strategy for cancer prevention among Indigenous populations, addressing tobacco-related health disparities by promoting smoke-free home policies and supporting smoking cessation within family units. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. The first group receives the smoke-free home program, which includes mailed educational materials at enrollment and during weeks 4 and 6, along with a coaching call in week 2. The second group receives usual care and may optionally receive the smoke-free home program after the six-month follow-up period. Participants are followed up at 3 and 6 months after the intervention. During the study, participants provide self-reports about smoke-free home status, smoke-free vehicles, secondhand smoke exposure at home, the number of cigarettes smoked in the home, and public support for smoke-free tribal housing through telephone interviews at 3 and 6 months. The study monitors these outcomes to assess the intervention's effectiveness in reducing secondhand smoke exposure and supporting smoke-free environments within tribal communities.
