What this Trial Is About

This research aims to evaluate a One-Page Truth-Telling Aid designed to improve communication between physicians and patients with cancer during cancer-related disclosure consultations. The study focuses on whether this aid can enhance patients satisfaction with how information is explained, reduce emotional distress, and boost physicians confidence in communicating sensitive cancer information. It is a two-arm, single-blind clinical trial conducted in oncology outpatient settings. Participants are divided into two groups based on their physicians assignment. Patients in the experimental group complete the One-Page Truth-Telling Aid before their consultation, which summarizes their preferences and questions for the physician. Patients in the control group receive a blank sheet to write down any questions or concerns. Physicians receive either the aid or usual care materials, and both patients and physicians complete questionnaires at multiple time points to assess outcomes. During the study, patients complete questionnaires before and immediately after their consultation, as well as at 3 and 6 months post-consultation. Physicians also complete brief surveys at baseline, one week after enrolling their first patient, and at 3 and 6 months. The study measures include patient-reported truth-telling experiences, emotional distress, decisional regret, and physician confidence. This trial aims to provide evidence on whether a brief communication aid can support patient-centered truth-telling and improve communication outcomes in cancer care.
