What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying the effects of increasing dietary polyphenol intake through the consumption of oregano and basil leaves in patients who have recently experienced unstable angina, a type of acute coronary syndrome. This study aims to evaluate how these herbs impact plasma inflammatory and lipid factors as well as total urinary polyphenol levels, given the potential antioxidant and lipid-modulating properties of these polyphenol-rich foods that may help reduce cardiovascular risk factors. The study is a randomized controlled trial involving two groups of patients who meet eligibility criteria. One group will receive standard medical treatment along with general dietary advice to reduce salt, fat, and simple sugar intake. The second group will receive the same standard treatment and dietary advice, plus will consume 4-5 grams each of dried oregano and basil leaves daily for two months. Participants are instructed to avoid any other herbal medications or dietary supplements during the study. Participants will be assessed at the start and after two months for plasma inflammatory biomarkers, plasma lipids, plasma malondialdehyde, urinary total polyphenols, and plasma PCSK9 and PAI-1 levels. These measures will help researchers understand the effects of the dietary intervention on inflammation and lipid profiles. The study will monitor participant health and adherence throughout, with the total participation lasting two months.
