What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating whether behavioral counseling through video sessions leads to better adherence and higher success rates in quitting smoking compared to traditional face-to-face counseling. The study is observational and aims to support smokers in stopping smoking, following guidelines from the Italian Tobacco Society that recommend long-term counseling to reduce relapse risk. Participants choose between two groups: one attends six in-person counseling sessions over six months at a hospital anti-smoking center, plus a follow-up call after 12 months; the other has the same number of counseling sessions remotely via video call, with a similar 12-month follow-up call. Both approaches provide strategies to reduce smoking and professional support throughout the process. During the study, progress is monitored using tests like the Fagerstrom test, motivational questionnaires, and smoking diaries. Researchers assess the maintenance of smoking abstinence one year after starting counseling. The study aims to create a personalized smoking cessation program integrated with lung disease screening. Participation involves regular meetings and follow-up calls over a year.
