What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating how smartphone addiction affects the biomechanical properties and sensory sensitivity of thumb muscles in university students aged 18 to 30. This observational study aims to identify whether excessive smartphone use causes differences in muscle tone, stiffness, elasticity, and sensory discrimination abilities. The study will compare students classified as addicted or non-addicted based on the Smartphone Addiction Scale - Short Version (SAS-SV). Participants will be grouped into addicted and non-addicted categories according to their SAS-SV scores. Weekly smartphone screen time will be recorded, and the types of applications used will be categorized. Thumb muscle properties will be measured using the MyotonPro™ device on three specific muscles in both hands, while sensory sensitivity will be assessed with a Baseline Aesthesiometer through a two-point discrimination test. All assessments are non-invasive and conducted during one laboratory visit. During the study visit, participants will undergo biomechanical and sensory evaluations of their thumbs without receiving any treatment or intervention. Researchers will measure muscle tone, stiffness, elasticity, and sensory discrimination to explore associations with smartphone use. The primary outcome is muscle assessment using MyotonPro™ at baseline, and secondary outcomes include sensory testing and smartphone addiction scoring. The study is expected to start in July 2025 and continue until July 2026.
