Healthcare Organizational Structural Conditions and the Health of People Recently Released From Prison

What this Trial Is About

People recently released from prison face many challenges such as unstable housing, limited employment, stigma, and poor health. They experience twice the rate of cardiovascular deaths compared to the general population and have a higher risk of heart-related events within two years after release. This research aims to understand how healthcare system structures affect access to care and health outcomes for these individuals. Participants will be enrolled in a prospective cohort study where their exposure to healthcare organizational conditions like access policies, transition programs, cultural factors, support for social needs, and specialized services will be assessed through surveys. The study will then examine how these factors relate to healthcare use, including clinic visits, emergency visits, and hospitalizations over 12 months, as well as cardiovascular hospitalizations and overall mortality. During the study, participants will be followed for 12 months with data collected on their healthcare usage and health outcomes. Researchers will analyze how personal characteristics like race, ethnicity, gender, age, and baseline cardiovascular health influence these results. The study is observational, meaning participants' care will continue as usual while researchers observe and collect information about their health and healthcare access.
