What this Trial Is About

Researchers are exploring the use of immersive virtual reality (VR) music to support the mental health of older adults admitted to acute care. This study focuses on adults aged 60 and over who are medically stable and hospitalized in a geriatric assessment unit. The goal is to evaluate the feasibility, tolerability, and acceptability of a VR-based music program compared to listening to music alone in this setting. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. The treatment group experiences a 15-minute immersive VR music session where they wear a VR headset showing a virtual musical performance with visuals of musicians and the stage. The control group listens to the same music through a headband but without any visual immersion. Both groups remain seated during the session, and a research assistant stays nearby to assist or address any concerns. Throughout the 2-day study period, researchers will assess how well participants tolerate and accept the VR music intervention and whether it can improve positive emotions and reduce pain. Participants’ vital signs, comfort, and feedback will be monitored closely. This trial is sponsored by St. Mary's Research Center in Canada and aims to gather preliminary data on this innovative non-drug approach to enhance well-being in hospitalized older adults.
