What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating a workplace-based intervention designed to address depression and physical inactivity among low-wage hospital service workers. The study focuses on how depression and lack of physical activity contribute to cardiometabolic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, especially in low-wage workers who often face social disadvantages. The trial aims to tailor support to the unique social and behavioral needs of this group, improving engagement and health outcomes. The intervention, called Be Well at Work-PLUS, includes eight sessions of telephone-delivered depression care combined with work-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, work coaching, social needs screening and referral, and personalized text message support for mood and physical activity. This adaptation of an evidence-based program has been designed with input from low-wage workers to ensure feasibility. Initially, a small pilot study will test and refine the intervention before a larger randomized trial is conducted separately. Participants will be involved for about four months, during which they will receive the intervention and complete assessments at regular intervals. Researchers will monitor depression symptom severity, physical activity levels, sleep quality, blood pressure, body mass index, work limitations, and perceived stress. The study will also evaluate how acceptable and feasible the intervention is for participants. All data collection and support are conducted remotely, with text messages used to encourage mood and activity improvements.
