ADAPT: Approach to Dance for Autism Recreational Ballet Program for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Researchers are investigating how participation in a recreational ballet program called Ballet For All Kids (BFAK) affects children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study aims to expand on earlier pilot work by examining whether a 12-week ballet program can improve motor skills as well as psychological, social, and behavioral abilities in children with ASD aged 6 to 12 years. This randomized trial involves 32 participants and is conducted at a single site. Participants will be divided into two groups based on prior experience with BFAK and randomly assigned to either start 45-minute weekly ballet classes in the fall (Level 1 or Level 2 curriculum) or be placed on a waitlist control group that will begin classes in the spring. Both groups will attend classes once a week for 12 weeks. Parents or guardians will complete surveys at specific points during the study to assess the effects of the dance program. During the study, researchers will evaluate changes in motor coordination using tools like the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire, Pediatric Balance Scale, and Movement Assessment Battery for Children. They will also monitor behavior and mood through questionnaires including the Aberrant Behavior Checklist and SNAP-IV. Attendance will be tracked throughout the 12-week intervention. The study runs from August 2025 to May 2026 with assessments at baseline, mid-intervention, and post-intervention.
