Analysis of Oral Health of Students and Former Students of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs at the University of São Paulo: A Cohort Study

Researchers are conducting a prospective cohort study to evaluate oral and systemic health among current and former undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of São Paulo over five years. The study aims to understand how oral health affects academic performance and attendance while exploring social and behavioral factors like diet, stress, and tobacco or electronic cigarette use. Participants are grouped as dental students, who are knowledgeable about oral health and prevention, and non-dental students, who may have less awareness and unknown prevention habits. The study observes these groups without interventions, tracking outcomes such as periodontal health, oral health literacy, and caries prevalence. Throughout the study, participants will have their plaque index measured regularly for up to five years. Data collection will include assessments of oral health status, questionnaires on lifestyle and behavioral factors, and monitoring of academic outcomes. The study promotes health insights and strategies for the university community while allowing voluntary participation and follow-up.
