Comparing Open and Laparoscopic Right Colectomy for Managing Anastomotic Leakage in Colon Disease

Researchers are studying patients who underwent elective right colectomy surgery for benign or malignant diseases in the right colon. This observational study collects data from seven colorectal units in Austria covering surgeries performed between January 2010 and December 2019. The focus is on comparing outcomes of anastomotic leaks after open versus laparoscopic right colectomy to understand if the initial surgical approach affects management and recovery. The study evaluates interventions used to manage anastomotic leaks, including operative suturing of the leak with lavage and drainage during revision surgery, formation of a new anastomosis after removing the old leaking one, and fecal diversion by creating a stoma. Patients are grouped based on whether they had laparoscopic or open right hemicolectomy. Participants demographic, perioperative, and postoperative clinical data are analyzed retrospectively. The main outcome measured is the clinical result of patients who experienced anastomotic leakage over the study period. This study does not involve new treatments but reviews past patient data to assess outcomes related to surgical management strategies.
