What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating the best time to resume oral feeding after small intestine surgery, a topic with differing opinions. Some surgeons support early feeding soon after anesthesia recovery, while others recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours. This study aims to compare early versus late feeding to understand their effects on recovery and complications after small bowel anastomosis. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: the early group starts enteral feeding within 24 hours after waking fully from anesthesia, and the late group begins feeding 24 to 48 hours after recovery. Both approaches are being studied to assess their impact on postoperative recovery and hospital stay. During the study, researchers will monitor how soon patients pass stool or gas within two weeks after surgery, as well as the length of hospital stay and occurrence of vomiting up to 50 weeks post-surgery. Participants will be followed closely to observe these outcomes, helping to determine the safest and most effective feeding schedule after bowel surgery.

1 visit (in-person)

Surgery and Immediate Post-operative Care

Duration - Up to 48 hours post-surgery

Participants undergo small bowel anastomosis surgery and recovery from anesthesia before beginning enteral feeding.

1 hospitalization period including surgery and immediate recovery

Supportive Care: Enteral Feeding Resumption

Duration - Within 48 hours post-surgery

Participants receive enteral feeding either within 24 hours or between 24 and 48 hours after surgery once fully conscious, depending on group assignment.

Feeding timing depends on group; no additional visits required solely for feeding
