What this Trial Is About

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by unwanted intrusive thoughts called obsessions and repetitive actions called compulsions. This trial evaluates the effectiveness of Brief Culturally Adapted Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Ca-CBT) specifically designed for OCD, focusing on adapting the therapy to the Pakistani cultural context. The study aims to provide evidence on how culturally tailored CBT can help manage OCD symptoms, addressing a gap in research for low and middle-income countries. Participants in the study are randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group receives the Ca-CBT manual alongside usual treatment, which typically includes medication and regular hospital visits. The therapy covers psychoeducation, symptom management, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), relaxation techniques, mood and thought detection, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, problem solving, and communication skills. The other group receives only the usual treatment without the therapy manual or psychologist intervention. During the 6-week study, participants will undergo assessments measuring the therapy's effectiveness and acceptability in reducing OCD symptoms. Secondary evaluations include changes in depression, anxiety, and daily functioning related to OCD. Researchers will monitor progress through thought diaries and symptom tracking. The total participation period and safety assessments extend up to study completion at the end of 2025.
