What this Trial Is About

This research project focuses on understanding injury patterns among professional female ice hockey players in Sweden who are allowed to body check. The study aims to identify common injury types and how they occur to help clinicians diagnose and manage injuries better. It also seeks to guide injury prevention strategies through education, coaching, rule enforcement, equipment improvement, and sportsmanship, aiming to reduce the number and severity of sport-related injuries that affect athletes' quality of life and create societal costs. The study observes elite female ice hockey players in the highest Swedish professional league without any intervention or treatment being given. It will collect data over a period to track injuries during training and games to assess injury rates per 1000 hours of exposure. The observational design means participants continue their usual activities while researchers monitor injury occurrences. Participants will be monitored to record injuries sustained during training and games over one year. Researchers will collect data on injuries per 1000 training hours and per 1000 game hours. This information will help to better understand injury risks in women's ice hockey and contribute to developing future prevention programs. The study is sponsored by Lund University and will run from December 2023 to January 2028.
