Pulmonary Fibrosis is a condition where lung tissue becomes scarred and thickened, reducing the lungs' ability to transfer oxygen to the blood. Researchers aim to study this process at the cellular level by comparing lung tissue from patients with pulmonary fibrosis to those without the disease. This observational study is designed to increase understanding of the causes of pulmonary fibrosis using explanted lung tissues. The study involves collecting lung tissue samples from patients who are undergoing lung transplant surgery. These samples will be used to isolate cells such as fibroblasts and analyze cytokines associated with pulmonary fibrosis. There are no study drugs or treatments given, as this is an observational study focused on tissue analysis. Participants will be patients awaiting lung transplant surgery who agree to provide consent for their lung tissue to be used in research. Researchers will assess the cellular components involved in pulmonary fibrosis and measure specific markers related to the disease. The study is sponsored by the University of Chicago and aims to improve knowledge about pulmonary fibrosis through detailed tissue studies.
