What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating a parenting program called Families with Pride (Familias con Orgullo) designed to help Hispanic sexual minority youth aged 13 to 19. The study aims to see if this intervention can prevent or reduce drug use and depressive symptoms. It will also examine improvements in parent support, acceptance, family communication, and reductions in general and sexual minority-related stress. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive the Families with Pride intervention, which includes 11 weekly in-person sessions over 12 weeks: seven parent group sessions, three adolescent group sessions, and four family sessions. The sessions focus on building social support, family functioning, and coping skills related to sexual minority stress. The other group will receive standard care without the intervention for the same period. During the study, participants will be assessed from baseline up to 30 months for changes in depression symptoms and drug use frequency and quantity. Additional measures include sexual behavior, family functioning, adolescent stress, parent acceptance, and sexual minority stress. Researchers will track the effects of the intervention over time to understand its impact on youth and family dynamics.
