What this Trial Is About
Researchers are comparing two different bone augmentation techniques for restoring the atrophic posterior mandible in adults. The study evaluates the bone gained histologically from Khourys Bone Shell Technique versus the use of a titanium-reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE membrane, aiming to determine which method is more suitable for implant placement. This research focuses on bone quality and quantity in patients with horizontal bone deficiency in the back lower jaw. One group of participants will receive a non-resorbable titanium-reinforced PTFE membrane fixed with microscrews, filled with a mixture of autogenous bone harvested from the external oblique ridge and xenograft, and covered with a collagen membrane to reduce wound complications. The other group will undergo Khourys Bone Shell Technique, involving harvesting a thin cortical bone shell from the mandibular retromolar area, stabilizing it at the defect site with microscrews, and filling the gap with a similar bone mixture followed by collagen membrane coverage. Both procedures use specialized surgical tools and techniques to promote bone regeneration. Participants will be monitored for 6 months post-procedure, during which histomorphometric analysis will measure the amount and quality of new bone formed. The study involves random assignment to one of the two treatment groups, with double-blind masking. Safety and healing will be assessed through clinical follow-ups, and participants may undergo evaluations related to bone healing and ridge augmentation. The total participation time includes the surgical procedure and six months of follow-up to assess outcomes.
