Study of COPD Patient Types and Their Exacerbations in Adults Aged 40 to 100

What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD to better understand the different patient types based on how often they experience flare-ups, known as exacerbations. The study aims to examine how these exacerbations affect health status and disease progression. It also looks at various factors related to COPD such as lung function, baseline treatments, inflammation markers, gene expression, and co-existing health conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and psychological illnesses. This is an observational study without specific treatments being tested. Participants are monitored to collect detailed information on their lung function, inflammatory markers, airway infections, gene expression, heart rate variability, and other health indicators. The study builds on a long-established group that started in 1995 and continues to observe COPD patients over time to understand their disease better. Participants will be followed to track the number of COPD exacerbations they experience over a year. Researchers will assess lung function, health status, inflammatory markers, and other biological and clinical data. The study involves regular health assessments and monitoring to gather comprehensive information about each patients disease and overall health. The main outcome measured is the annual rate of exacerbations over 12 months.
