What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying adults to understand how cardiorespiratory fitness, measured by VO2max or VO2peak, relates to blood-based molecular markers. This observational study aims to find out if a blood test can accurately predict fitness levels, how these markers differ by age, sex, and physical activity, whether they reflect changes after self-directed fitness programs like marathon training, and the consistency of these biomarker measurements. There is no treatment given in this study. Participants will undergo VO2max testing to measure their aerobic capacity and provide fasted, resting blood samples on the same day. Some participants may choose to return for follow-up testing after about three months if they are engaging in their own fitness training, allowing researchers to observe changes over time. Participants will be asked to complete fitness testing, blood collection, and questionnaires. Safety is ensured by screening participants to confirm they can safely perform maximal exercise testing. Researchers will analyze how well a multi-analyte biomarker panel predicts maximal aerobic capacity and tracks changes during self-directed training. The study includes initial assessments and optional follow-up visits, lasting on average three months for those who participate in re-testing.

  • Able to understand and provide informed consent in English or other supported languages
  • Willing to complete VO2max testing, blood draw, and questionnaires
  • Able to safely perform maximal or symptom-limited exercise testing as determined by PAR-Q+ screening and investigator review
  • Passing resting vital signs screening (heart rate)
Not Eligible

You will not qualify if you...

  • Conditions that make maximal exercise testing unsafe, as judged by investigator or medical doctor (e.g., unstable cardiovascular symptoms)
  • Contraindications or unwillingness to undergo blood draw (venipuncture)
  • Acute illness such as fever or significant respiratory illness at the time of testing
  • Failure to comply with study procedures
