What this Trial Is About

Researchers are studying how to better measure physical activities and sedentary behaviors in people over 65 years old by validating specific raw accelerometer cut-points. These cut-points help classify activity intensity based on energy expenditure and functional status, which is important because older adults have different biomechanics and physiology than younger adults. The study aims to improve the accuracy of activity measurement in older adults, which has been limited so far. Participants will be divided into four groups: one general group including all subjects over 65 who can walk independently, and three groups based on low, medium, or high physical function status. While wearing accelerometers and a portable gas analyzer, participants will perform physical activities of varying intensity. Their energy expenditure will be matched with accelerometer data to derive cut-points for sedentary time, light activity, and moderate-to-vigorous activity. During the study, which will last about one year, researchers will measure resting metabolic rate, energy use during physical activity, accelerometry data, physical function, frailty, and activity patterns. Additional assessments include heart rate and body composition. The study will observe participants' activity and functional status over time to validate the accelerometer measurements and better understand older adults' physical behaviors.
