What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating three different approaches to improve mental health outcomes among children aged 7 to 14 from low-income families in Azerbaijan. The study aims to refine and test family-strengthening interventions, trauma-focused mental health services, and economic empowerment through Child Savings Accounts. This research addresses the limited mental health resources and the impact of poverty, trauma, and adversity on children's emotional and behavioral wellbeing in the region. Participants will be assigned to usual care or one or more of the three intervention components. Family strengthening involves 12 weekly sessions led by trained facilitators to improve family functioning and parenting skills. Economic empowerment includes opening savings accounts for children with matched funds, 12 weekly financial education sessions, and monthly mentoring. Trauma-focused mental health services provide 12 individual sessions guided by the Attachment, Regulation, and Competency framework, including clinical assessments and tailored care plans. Children and their caregivers will complete baseline, 1-year, and 2-year follow-up surveys assessing mental health symptoms, cognitive and social processes, and functional outcomes such as academic performance. Additional process surveys will gather feedback on intervention sessions. Qualitative interviews will also explore experiences with the interventions. The study will monitor changes in child mental health using standardized questionnaires and cognitive tests over two years.
