Study of Factors Affecting Flare-ups and Survival in Adults with Non-Cystic Fibrosis Bronchiectasis in Hong Kong

Bronchiectasis is a lung condition marked by repeated flare-ups, occurring 1.5 to 6.5 times per patient each year. These flare-ups increase the risk of hospital admissions and lead to high healthcare costs. A previous local study found that most patients with bronchiectasis, primarily females, had idiopathic disease with significant hospitalizations and mortality rates. This research aims to update the understanding of bronchiectasis prevalence, causes, symptoms, and outcomes to improve future management plans. This observational study follows adults diagnosed with bronchiectasis confirmed by a high-resolution CT scan. Participants must be clinically stable for at least four weeks before joining and will be monitored over five years without any interventional treatment. The study will record the number of bronchiectasis flare-ups and mortality rates during this period to better understand disease progression. Participants will be observed for five years, during which their frequency of exacerbations and survival will be tracked. The study will collect data on symptom changes, hospitalizations, and treatment needs. This long-term follow-up aims to provide comprehensive information to guide care strategies and reduce the impact of bronchiectasis on patients health and healthcare resources.
