What this Trial Is About

Researchers are investigating the differences in exercise capacity and cardiopulmonary responses between individuals with bronchiectasis and healthy controls. Bronchiectasis causes symptoms like productive cough and recurrent lung infections, leading to reduced exercise ability and muscle strength. This study compares responses from various exercise tests including the 6-minute stepper test (6MST), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1STS) to better understand their relationships and assess physical function. The study involves two groups: individuals with bronchiectasis and healthy controls matched by age and sex. Participants will undergo exercise tests such as the 6MST, 6MWT, and 1STS, with cardiopulmonary responses recorded before and after these tests. Muscle strength and respiratory pressures will also be evaluated on the first day. No interventions or treatments are given as this is an observational study. Participants will attend a single study day where they complete muscle strength assessments and perform the exercise tests under supervision. Researchers will measure outcomes like maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, peripheral muscle strength, and exercise test responses. Additional evaluations include lung function tests, dyspnea assessment, and disease severity indexes. The study aims to gather detailed data on exercise capacity and cardiopulmonary function in bronchiectasis compared to healthy individuals.
