What this Trial Is About
Researchers are investigating how Emotion Regulation Therapy ERT delivered via telehealth affects individuals in New York State who experience high levels of worry, rumination, or self-criticism. The study aims to understand how specific treatment mechanisms change over time, how therapist and client agreement on skills and goals influences outcomes, and to assess the preliminary effects of a 6-module, flexible version of ERT on symptoms like anxiety, depression, and overall functioning. Participants will receive ERT through weekly telehealth sessions using videoconferencing and an online platform that supports skill practice and treatment activities between sessions. The treatment includes psychoeducation about anxiety and depression, self-monitoring, skill development for emotional awareness and regulation, somatic awareness exercises, and relapse prevention. The therapy consists of 6 modules delivered over 12 to 22 weeks, depending on individual progress. During the study, participants will complete an online pre-screening and a clinical interview via Zoom, then attend 12 to 22 weekly therapy sessions remotely. They will fill out 18 to 28 weekly questionnaires before, during, and after treatment to measure changes in attention control, decentering, reappraisal, motivation, rumination, worry, self-criticism, depression, and anxiety. The study includes follow-up assessments for 4 weeks after treatment ends, with continuous monitoring of treatment effects and participant satisfaction.
