What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating ways to improve mental health service connections for children involved in Child Welfare Services (CWS). The study focuses on enhancing Child Family Team (CFT) meetings by adding an After Action Review (AAR) approach to better include children and families, aiming to increase satisfaction and shared decision-making. This project includes qualitative assessments and tailored interventions to address gaps in current services and improve team effectiveness. The study involves two groups: one receiving usual CFT meetings and another receiving CFT meetings enhanced with the After Action Review. CFT meetings identify behavioral, emotional, or social needs within 60 days of a child entering CWS and produce an Action Plan. The AAR is a team reflection process designed to improve learning and performance in a supportive, non-judgmental manner. The intervention is behavioral and focuses on improving the collaboration and fidelity of CFT services. Participants include CWS leaders, caseworkers, formal and informal CFT members, parents or caregivers of children aged 6 to 17 with open CWS cases, and children with identified mental health service needs. Data collection includes surveys measuring satisfaction, collaboration, team processes, and fidelity to the CFT model over about nine months. Researchers will also review administrative behavioral health data and various psychological and team effectiveness measures. The study aims to assess how well the AAR-enhanced CFT improves service linkage and decision-making.
