What this Trial Is About
Researchers are studying the effectiveness of a mobile app called CALM Cognitive Applications for Life Management to help Veterans who have difficulties with anger and impulsivity due to traumatic brain injury TBI and posttraumatic stress disorder PTSD. These conditions often occur together in Veterans and can cause challenges in controlling emotions and social interactions. The study aims to see if CALM can improve anger control, impulsivity, executive function, social functioning, and reduce PTSD symptoms and suicidal thoughts compared to brain health education. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group uses the CALM mobile app, which includes goal management training, content-free cues to prompt goal-directed behavior, and an n-back task to improve working memory and inhibitory control. The other group receives brain health education materials and uses the Concussion Coach app. Both groups use their assigned intervention for three months and receive support through videoconference calls at the start, middle, and end of the program. During the study, Veterans and their chosen family member or friend will be assessed before starting, after three months, and again at six months. Assessments include measuring anger, impulsivity, and executive function using standardized tests. The study monitors participants progress and support throughout. Total participation lasts at least six months, with repeated evaluations to measure changes in symptoms and behaviors.
