What this Trial Is About
Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of Listerine and Chlorhexidine mouthwashes in improving gum and plaque health for patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. This trial focuses on patients aged 13 to 40 years with permanent teeth who are receiving braces, as fixed appliances can cause plaque buildup leading to gum inflammation. The purpose is to compare these two mouthwashes to see which better supports periodontal health during orthodontic care. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will use Listerine mouthwash containing essential oils, and the other will use Chlorhexidine mouthwash at 0.12% concentration. Both groups will rinse once daily with 10 ml of mouthwash for 30 seconds after brushing, over a 4-week period. The mouthwashes are given in unlabelled bottles to keep the study double-blind. Standard oral hygiene instructions are also provided. During the study, gum health and plaque levels will be assessed at the start, after 2 weeks, and after 4 weeks using Gingival Index and Plaque Index measurements. Side effects will be monitored throughout the 8 weeks. Oral examinations will be done by trained examiners using standard tools. Data analysis will compare the mouthwashes' effects, considering factors like age and gender. The total participation time includes baseline and follow-up assessments over 8 weeks.
