Retrospective and Prospective Observational Study on Non-infectious Chronic Uveitis in Pediatric Age

Uveitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the uvea, a key vascular part of the eye, and is rare in children, accounting for 2% to 14% of all uveitis cases in the pediatric population. Diagnosing and managing this condition requires a team approach involving eye specialists, rheumatologists, and infectious disease experts to ensure accurate diagnosis and evaluation of other organ involvement. This observational study focuses on children with non-infectious chronic uveitis, a form estimated to represent 95% of pediatric uveitis cases in Italy, where no national registry currently exists for this condition. The study is conducted at the Universitary Hospital Meyer Institute Research Hospital (IRCCS), a national referral center for pediatric non-infectious chronic uveitis. It involves both retrospective and prospective data collection to describe the population of affected children and to monitor their condition over time. Researchers will assess disease characteristics, treatment responses, risk factors for severe disease, and episodes of disease flare-ups, following patients at intervals including 6 months, 12 months, 2 years, and annually thereafter. Participants are followed through clinical observations and data recording systems used by the hospital. Researchers will track various outcomes such as the time to achieve disease inactivity on therapy, the frequency and timing of flare-ups, and responses to medications according to established definitions. The study will continue monitoring participants through the study period and for at least one year to gather comprehensive information on disease progression and treatment results.
