What this Trial Is About
Researchers are exploring the differences between alcohol intoxication, cannabis intoxication, and combined use of both substances. This study uses electroencephalography (EEG) alongside traditional measures like breath alcohol concentration and balance tests to better understand the effects of these substances. Adults who regularly use both alcohol and legal-market cannabis are the focus of this randomized, parallel-group study. Participants are assigned to one of three groups: cannabis only, alcohol only, or both alcohol and cannabis. Those in the cannabis group will self-administer their own legal-market flower cannabis at home without researcher instruction. The alcohol group receives a dose designed to reach a blood alcohol concentration of 0.06 g/dL in a mobile lab. The combined group first self-administers cannabis at home, then receives alcohol in the mobile lab. During the study session, participants undergo EEG tests and balance assessments immediately before substance use, and then at 1, 2, and 4 hours post-use. Researchers measure EEG amplitude and latency as objective cognitive function indicators and standing postural stability. The study monitors participants throughout these time points to evaluate intoxication effects. Participation duration is based on these scheduled assessments within a single session.
