What this Trial Is About

Researchers are evaluating a technology-based exercise game (exergame) as a combined motor and cognitive training method for middle-aged older adults in China who have subjective cognitive decline. The study focuses on testing the feasibility of this intervention and estimating its initial effects on improving physical abilities, cognition, and dual-task performance. This pilot randomized controlled trial is led by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and involves participants aged 50 to 60 years. Participants are randomly assigned to either an exergame-assisted motor-cognitive training group or a blank control group with no intervention. The intervention lasts 4 weeks and involves simultaneous motor and cognitive training through the exergame. The study measures recruitment, retention, adherence, acceptability, and adverse events related to the intervention. Secondary outcomes include changes in muscle strength, balance, endurance, mobility, flexibility, and cognitive function assessed through multiple standardized tests and scales. During the study, participants undergo assessments at baseline and immediately after the 4-week intervention period. These assessments include grip strength, chair stand tests, functional reach test, 6-minute walk test, timed up and go, one-legged standing, and cognitive evaluations using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and other cognitive tools. Researchers monitor adherence and adverse events, while gathering narrative feedback on acceptability. The total participation time covers the 4-week intervention and immediate post-intervention assessments without additional follow-up.
