What this Trial Is About

Heart attack is a leading cause of death worldwide, especially in Scotland. Many people have increased risk due to genetics, health conditions, and lifestyle. This research investigates whether long-term inflammation, such as gum disease, contributes to heart attack risk by comparing gum health in patients who recently had a heart attack with those who have no heart disease history, adjusting for other risk factors. The study aims to inform future research on gum disease treatment and its potential to reduce heart attack risk and costs. The study involves two groups: patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction diagnosed by current clinical guidelines, recruited within three days of admission, and a control group of dental patients matched by age, gender, and heart disease risk factors but without heart attack history. Participants receive a full-mouth periodontal examination using a computerized probe to assess gum health. Recruitment for the heart attack group is complete, while control group recruitment is ongoing. Participants undergo assessments of their gum condition at a single point in time to measure periodontitis prevalence. Researchers collect detailed health and risk factor information to ensure accurate matching between groups. The study focuses on observing associations between gum disease and heart attacks without treatment interventions. Participant involvement includes dental examinations and health data collection, with the study running from 2018 to 2027.
