Study of Candida Albicans in Syrian Adults with Chronic Periodontitis Examining Its Prevalence and Effects on Oral Health

Researchers are investigating the role of Candida albicans, a common fungal pathogen, in patients with periodontitis, an oral disease characterized by inflammation and destruction of the structures supporting the teeth. This study focuses on Syrian patients to better understand how Candida albicans may affect periodontal health in this population. The study is observational and aims to identify the presence and impact of this fungus in people with chronic periodontitis. Participants will undergo a clinical periodontal assessment, including examination of attachment loss and probing depth. Samples of plaque from beneath the gums subgingival pockets will be collected for microbiological testing to detect Candida albicans. The study groups include Syrian patients diagnosed with periodontitis and Syrian individuals without periodontal disease. During the study, participants will be assessed at enrollment with periodontal screening and recording index measurements. Researchers will analyze subgingival samples to detect Candida species. The study involves no treatment and aims to monitor oral health status and fungal presence. Participation requires consent and includes patients aged 18 years and older. The study is expected to continue until September 2026.
